On 01/21/2024 around 7:00 am, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office along with the Jones County Sheriff’s Office were asked to assist the US Marshal Service with locating a Fugitive at a residence on Rouse Chapel Rd in Greene County.
At approximately 3:00 AM on January 22, 2025, Kinston Police Department (KPD) D Squad responded to the area of Mitchell Wooten in reference to a shots fired call. Dispatchers reported hearing gunshots while the call was being made, prompting a swift response from multiple officers.

The suspect was reportedly seen fleeing the scene in a vehicle. As officers made their way to the location, they observed the suspect vehicle traveling on Vernon Avenue near Queen Street and initiated a traffic stop.

The driver, identified as Montez Nelson, 44, of Kinston, became uncooperative and refused to follow officer commands. After officers removed Nelson from the vehicle, a search uncovered a firearm, drug paraphernalia, and cocaine.
On January 10, 2025, the Kinston Police Department was notified of an assault on a 6-year-old child by LCPS Central Office . Officers spoke with the child's parents, who had been informed of the incident by Northwest Elementary School. The officers were told that the child's substitute teacher, Martha Jones (69, of Kinston), had hit their child.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrests of a Lenoir County couple on a total of eight arson and fraud related charges. Monteze Rodriguez Nelson, 44, and Jalesia Madrid Nelson, 33, both of 1609 George Ave., Kinston, were each charged with second degree arson, felony conspiracy, insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense. All eight charges are felonies.
