LCSO release on shooting into Amazon vehicles, head-on collision on N.C. 11
A Charlotte man is in critical condition after shooting at three Amazon delivery trucks Sunday morning and then being involved in a vehicle accident while driving on the wrong side of the road. Two women are also in critical condition after his vehicle struck theirs in the head-on collision.
Lonneil Cordarius Mason, 34, is in critical but stable condition at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville after the vehicle he was driving, a 2011 white BMW, hit an SUV in a head-on collision. Mason was driving north in the southbound lane of N.C. 11 when his BMW struck three vehicles — the first vehicle lost a mirror, the second was hit head-on by Mason and the third was a truck hauling mowers on a trailer.
No one was injured in the first and third collisions but there were two female victims in the head-on collision. Both are at ECU Health in Greenville; one was transported by EastCare from UNC Lenoir Health in Kinston to Greenville. The female victims are in critical condition. Their names are being withheld until family is contacted.
Before the traffic collisions, which happened at approximately 10:30 a.m., Mason had shot into three Amazon vans, two on Felix Harvey Parkway and one on N.C. 11 north of the parkway.
The trio of shootings started at approximately 10:15 a.m. from Mason’s vehicle. The Harvey Parkway shootings involved vans driven by females; one was a shot through the passenger door by a .45 caliber pistol, while the second traveled through the back of the van and through several packages by an AR-15 pistol.
The third Amazon van shooting occurred on the driver’s side of a van driven by a man. None of the Amazon drivers were injured in the shootings.
LCSO deputies were the first law enforcement officers on site but were soon joined by members of the State Highway Patrol and the Grifton Police Department. Emergency responders included personnel from Lenoir County Emergency Services, the Hugo Volunteer Fire Department and the Sand Hill VFD. ECU Health Police also provided valuable aid in the investigation.
Following the collisions, Mason was transported by an EastCare helicopter to Greenville. Two pistols (the .45 caliber and the AR-15) were seized by LCSO deputies. There was also cocaine and Fentanyl located in his vehicle and on his person.
Warrants are being obtained against Mason by the LCSO, including three counts of attempted first degree murder, three counts of shooting into occupied property, possession of a firearm by a felon and one possession with intent to sell or deliver Schedule I controlled substance. Other charges may be pending with the LCSO and the SHP.
Mason was in prison from July 2009 until December 2020 after a conviction of second degree murder and breaking and entering for a crime that occurred on June 28, 2007. He was also charged in April 2007 for discharging a weapon into occupied property and armed terror of the people, but those charges were eventually dropped.
The LCSO and SHP continue to investigate the events that occurred Sunday morning.
