Parrott Academy’s junior and senior competitive shooting teams won a place on the podium in the District 2 NC Hunter Education Tournament held April 10th . Sponsored by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, the tournament lets young marksmen compete in shotgun, rifle, and archery events, as well as hunter skills testing.
A Hunger to Serve: Parrott students complete local project
Seventeen Parrott Academy high school students recently completed a three-day service learning project aimed at alleviating food insecurity in local communities. Designed by APA teacher and SERV advisor Leslie Lewis, the project put students to work at three sites around eastern North Carolina.
Parrott students take multiple awards in soil and water contests
APA students in grades 6 through 9 took top honors in multiple categories of the Lenoir Soil and Water Conservation Competition for 2021. Freshman Tien Le won first place in the digital poster contest, with Claire Mixon taking first place in the 6th grade poster contest.
Parrott holds ribbon cutting for huddle hall
On March 23rd, donors, trustees, and faculty joined Parrott Academy Head of School Brooks Sutton to cut the ribbon on the campus’s newest building, Huddle Hall.
Parrott students headed to summer study
Three Parrott Academy juniors have been accepted into the 2021 session of the N.C. Governor’s School. Juniors Kate Robinson and Ava Blair will attend with a concentration in dance, and junior Nastia Hnatov has been accepted into the visual arts program.
Parrott Academy advisor nationally recognized
The College Board recently honored Parrott Academy college advisor Mitzi Moye with the Counselor Recognition Award. According to the College Board, the award is given to “exemplary school counseling professionals who are proven lifelong learners, collaborators, and advocates.” Moye is one of only eight North Carolina counselors to receive this recognition.
Parrott Hall of Fame Inducts 12
Parrott Academy’s 2020 class of twelve Hall of Fame inductees was honored at a ceremony on February 5th. Inductees were Tiffany Barnes, Matt Beaman, Jordan Blount, Bert Bright, Jaclyn Ervin, Justin Good, Jesse Grant III, Mary Margaret Herring, Mark Keener, Preston Manning, Robert Mooring Jr., and Billy Taylor.
Happiness is a warm puppy for APA 4th graders
“Animals get cold this time of year! We want to make a big difference for them,” explained Parrott Academy fourth grader Londyn Vick as she placed another donated blanket on the pile in her classroom. She is one of 46 fourth graders who spent three weeks in January asking friends and family to donate old blankets, sheets, mattress covers, and other textiles to help the Lenoir County SPCA replenish animal bedding.
Parrott yearbook wins recognition
For the sixth consecutive year, Parrott Academy’s Patriot yearbook won a Gold Medal in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association national competition. And for the fourth consecutive year, the Patriot won the All-North Carolina rating from the NC Scholastic Media Association, one of only ten yearbooks in the state to receive this honor.
St. Mary’s Bell Tolls for COVID Remembrance
At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Kinston tolled the bell for Americans who have died from COVID-19. Everette Haddad, Boy Scout 2nd class and member of Troop 41, pulled the thick rope of St. Mary’s bell 40 times, once for each 10,000 COVID-19 deaths.
APA panel briefs on College, COVID, and confidence
Eight graduates of Parrott Academy returned to the school’s campus for panel discussions about college life on January 5th and 6th. “We’ve had this tradition for more than ten years,” commented college adviser Mitzi Moye, who helped plan for two socially distanced discussion events.
Parrott Academy marks anniversary
As 2020 closes, Arendell Parrott Academy marks the end of its 55th year as an educational and economic force in Lenoir County and eastern North Carolina. Founded in 1964 by a small group of local citizens, the academy has grown from 123 students in 1965 to this fall’s enrollment of 667.
Parrott French Students Create Tales
Six Parrott Academy students finished their first semester of French IV with a unique creative writing project. Designed by French teacher Sadie Crockett, the assignment asked the high schoolers to compose and illustrate an original children’s story in French for an audience of elementary school French students.
Holiday concert brings masked music to Parrott
On December 4th Parrott Academy’s annual Holiday Concert provided cheer to lower school students, even as performers were masked and the audience was masked and socially distanced. The traditional all-school assembly was replaced by three concerts for smaller groups of the school’s youngest classes.
Sorry, Grinch: Parrott students give 840 toys
Parrott’s SERV Society this week concluded a successful toy giving campaign, which started after students returned from Thanksgiving. Each day, a growing pile of toys filled collection boxes in the school lobby.
