Unsung Heroes: Brandy Chamberlain's Dedication to Mental Health Care
In a quiet office nestled on the corner, Brandy Chamberlain, a licensed clinical social worker and program director at Joseph's Community Support Services, Inc., has dedicated her life to providing mental health services to those who need them most.
With a broad smile, she welcomes patients into a world of empathy, understanding, and support. Her position, however, is more than a job. It's a calling, rooted in her deep passion for helping others overcome mental health challenges and achieve their goals.
Joseph's Community Support Services, Inc. is a safe haven for many in Kinston. They provide various mental health services, including community sports team programs for adults, peer support services, and child adolescent day treatment. Chamberlain, who has been working in the field since 2006, has helped create an environment where individuals feel seen and heard.
When asked what about her work is fulfilling, Chamberlain said, "I think seeing someone that I'm providing services for reach those goals that they set for themselves and watch them evolve and start advocating for themselves. There was a time when they weren't able to do it. So, I see them get their voice and speak up for themselves."
Chamberlain's work has resonated with many, even beyond her patients. Derrick White, a colleague, recommended Chamberlain as an unsung hero. "She is one of the most highly regarded therapists in the area. Brandy exhibits a level of empathy and compassion for her clientele and always goes the extra mile for them. She is a champion of mental health advocacy and the cornerstone of our organization.”
Despite her impactful work, Chamberlain remains humble and focused on the importance of mental health, particularly during trying times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
"There's a negative stigma on mental health. We all have mental health. We don't all have challenges with it, but we all have mental health. A challenge can come at any time," Chamberlain explained, emphasizing the availability of support at Joseph's Community Support Services.
Outside of her professional life, Chamberlain is a mother of two and a lover of sports, cooking, and traveling. Born and raised in Hookerton, she has found joy in the diversity and uniqueness of Kinston, where she has worked for most of her life.
Her love for cooking, especially chicken meals influenced by her daughter, is a highlight of her personal life, allowing her to decompress and engage in self-care activities.
Chamberlain's favorite thing about the community is the people. She frequents local restaurants like HOW II and The Social House, but her favorite place remains Joseph's Community Support Services, a testament to her devotion to her work and the people she serves.
Chamberlain's commitment to mental health care, her nurturing presence, and her passion for her community make her a Neuse News Unsung Hero. Her story is an inspiring reminder that the power of empathy, dedication, and love can change lives one day at a time.
As Chamberlain said, "Sometimes you just need a listening ear." Her unwavering support ensures that those who need it most always have someone to turn to.
