This is our first briefing on newly named Tropical Storm Helene. While the current track would keep the MOST significant impacts to our west, this will be a LARGE storm and we may still experience at least some impacts in Eastern North Carolina.
It should be noted that whether or not this system becomes tropical, the impacts for our area including heavy rain and flooding, coastal flooding and a few tornadoes have not changed drastically.
We are watching a potential development of a low pressure system off the Southeast U.S. coast this weekend into next week.
Uncertainty remains with the track and potential additional impacts beyond tomorrow due to weak steering currents in the upper atmosphere.
Impacts from potential Tropical Cyclone Four. may occur as early as Tuesday or Wednesday. Our first briefing is emphasizing that heavy rain, flooding and rip currents are the main threats as of now.
A weak front moving into NC today will produce scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The thunderstorms will have the potential to produce damaging winds, large hail, and torrential downpours.
Showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast through the weekend but the heaviest rain and greatest flash flood threat will be now through tonight.
There will be daily chances for shower and thunderstorm activity from today through Thursday. A few these storms have the potential to become severe with the greatest risk for seeing severe weather occurring on Thursday.

Showers and a few embedded storms will overspread Eastern NC this morning. After a break in the widespread showers, additional scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop ahead of an approaching cold front from the west this afternoon.
Rainfall amounts have increased once again. Current forecast shows widespread rainfall amounts between 2-5 inches with locally higher amounts possible especially west of Hwy 17.
There is still some uncertainty in the amounts and location of heaviest rainfall and coastal impacts.
