On Independence Day, 23 new U.S. citizens were sworn in at a naturalization ceremony held at Harmony Hall. The event was organized by the Lenoir County Historical Association and presided over by The Honorable James C. Dever III, a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
Most of us celebrate the Fourth of July as a way to honor The Declaration of Independence – the document that officially declared the 13 colonies as independent from Great Britain. We consider July 4th as the birthday of our nation.
Freshly decked out for the holidays, one of the oldest homes in Lenoir County and the oldest building in Kinston will be open to the public Sunday afternoon for an event that includes refreshments and a raffle for more than a dozen items.

On Friday, September 30, the Lenoir County Historical Association will hold a grand birthday celebration to serve a dual purpose. This year, 2022, marks the 250th anniversary of the construction of Harmony Hall – and it also marks the 51st anniversary of the founding of the Lenoir County Historical Association. The construction of Harmony Hall began in 1772, and the association held its organizational meeting in 1971.

For some time, I have been working at the Visitor Center at the intersection of US 70 and US 258 a couple of days a week. I had only been working a couple of weeks when one visitor from the Crystal Coast came in and asked, “Why would anyone come to Kinston? What is there to do here?”
Master Gardeners of Lenoir County Cooperative Extension decorated Harmony Hall for Christmas. Harmony Hall will host its open house Sunday from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
