On Monday, June 16, 2025, the Greene County Board of Commissioners convened at the Greene County Operations Center, 229 Kingold Blvd., Suite D, to address a comprehensive agenda focused on recreation, public safety, veterans’ services, infrastructure, and state legislative issues impacting local governance.
As a Greene County Commissioner, I am writing to express my concern about the timeline of the budget process for the upcoming 2025-2026 fiscal year in our county. While neighboring counties like Pitt, Lenoir, and Wilson are well into their budget discussions, holding workshops and making critical decisions, Greene County Commissioners have yet to receive a copy of our proposed budget.
Snow Hill’s Board of Commissioners enacted major changes to the town’s business landscape this week, approving comprehensive changes to both zoning and food truck ordinances. The changes, which passed unanimously, reflect the town’s efforts to align policies with existing business practices while encouraging new economic development.
Derek Burress, a first-term Greene County Commissioner running to retain his seat, is dedicated to addressing the needs of his constituents while navigating the complexities of local government. Burress has roots in Snow Hill and Shine, North Carolina, and draws on his diverse experiences, including his education from local institutions, his role as a certified firefighter, and nine years of coaching various sports. His opponent for the Greene County Board of Commissioners District 2 seat is Berry Anderson.
State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, will hold a public hearing on the Medical Debt De-Weaponization Act in New Bern from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13. Community members are invited to speak out to fight for change.
