Kinston High School celebrated 102 top academic achievers during the 48th annual Academic Banquet, a longstanding tradition that highlights the dedication and excellence of the school’s brightest students.
The event recognized 9th-12th grade students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance, with a particular spotlight on seniors ranking in the top ten of their class. Principal Kellan Bryant emphasizes the deeper meaning of the event.
“The 48th Annual Academic Banquet is more than just a celebration of student achievement,” Bryant said. “It is a yearly reminder of the dedication, perseverance, and support that define our school community. For our school staff, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do. For our students and their families, this evening is a well-earned moment of honor and pride.”
The keynote speaker, Kyle Brown, a 2012 KHS graduate and a rising leader in government affairs, returned to his hometown to inspire students with reflections on his own journey. Brown, a former student body president and state basketball champion at Kinston High, shared how the values instilled in him at KHS shaped his personal and professional success.
“This is a wonderful occasion for me because this is my home,” said Brown. “The lessons, guidance, and unwavering support I received here have been instrumental in helping me make my dreams a reality.”
Brown encouraged students to go beyond simply showing up — to take up space, be fully present, and boldly express their unique strengths.
“It’s important that you just don’t sit at the table,” he told the honorees. “You have to take up space proudly, make your presence undeniable, and make an inspiring, unforgettable impression.”
He shared lessons learned through personal highs and lows, emphasizing the value of academic achievement, resilience and preparation.
“It is cool to be smart,” Brown said. “Being smart isn’t only about grades. It’s about being curious, solving problems, and committing to lifelong learning.”
One of his most resonant messages to students was a reminder of their worth and potential. “You are enough, any day of the week,” he said. “The sky is truly your limit.”
As part of the ceremony, seniors in the top ten of the class were individually recognized and presented with a copy of Make Your Bed by Admiral William H. McRaven — a book selected to inspire students to focus on doing the little things right each day.
Bryant closed the program with words of pride and gratitude, not just for the students, but for the families and faculty who helped them along the way.
“Maintaining excellence in the classroom is no small feat,” Bryant said. “You are here tonight because your education is a priority for you, and you give your very best at Kinston High School every day.”
The annual banquet continues to be a hallmark of the Kinston High School tradition — not only honoring academic success but celebrating the community that supports it.
