The following inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:
Sandpiper Seafood

Observations:
Some bowls, fountain drink nozzles in oyster bar, and oyster plates were visibly dirty.
Lemons in wait area were uncovered. Food shall be covered and protected from potential contamination.
Employees prepping salad did not have on hair restraints. Employees prepping food shall wear effective hair restraints.
Gasket on raw seafood cooler is in disrepair and true freezer is missing bottom grate.
Dish machine, handles on equipment, and inside of drawers. Stickers on bottom of small bowls need to be completely removed to allow easy cleaning and keep surfaces smooth and easily cleanable.
Floor in front of fryers missing floor tiles and some grout wearing away in dish area.

Observations:
No food prep was witnessed during this inspection, but we also did not see any workers washing their hands when entering the kitchen after leaving. Employees shall wash hands every time they reenter the kitchen and before beginning any work in the kitchen.
Raw beef stored above cut and uncovered vegetables. Establishment shall rearrange to proper storage order to prevent contamination from occurring.
Containers holding utensils were visibly soiled, outside of containers holding ingredients visibly soiled, edges of rice cooker visibly soiled.
Thermometer provided by establishment but was not accurate. Establishment shall repair or replace to ensure thermometer functions appropriately.
Some oils and spices labeled at the front of establishment, the spices and oils at the back of the establishment are not labeled.
Observed live roaches, as well as pest remains and dead pest throughout establishment.
Cardboard and paper towels currently line the shelves in this establishment. These items are single service, and shall not be used for this purpose.
Single service spoons are currently being used as scoops for spices. Establishment shall replace with a proper scoop/utensil that can be properly washed, rinsed and sanitized.
Fryer baskets are beginning to deteriorate, establishment shall repair/replace to ensure equipment is functioning properly. The prep unit and the walk in cooler need to be repaired.
Build up present on gaskets, equipment doors, and shelves. Establishment shall clean and maintain.
Hand-wash sinks, toilets and urinals still need thorough cleaning.
Drain plug missing from dumpster.
Build up of grease, dirt, and debris present on floors and walls, especially behind cook line. Freezer floor and walk in cooler floor very visibly soiled with debris and blood.
There are lots of items stored in this establishment (on the bar area, in the dining room area, and the hallway leading to the dumpster). Any items that are not used shall be removed from the premises to allow proper cleaning to take place.
Golden China Buffet

Observations:
Several food borne illness risk factor violations. PIC shall ensure rules in the code for food safety and handling are met.
Employee entered kitchen and began working without washing hands.
Food had been set out during morning prep. When prepping food, it shall be removed from refrigeration and replaced quickly to maintain temperature.
No food in walk-in coolers were date marked.
Can of raid bug spray stored in contact with clean dishes. Store toxic materials to avoid contamination of food, equipment, utensils, linens, and single-service/use items.
Prep unit is not designed to properly cool food. Use alternate method to rapid cool food and utilize walk in units.
Wet wiping cloths laying around dish machine and ice machines.
Knife stored between prep table and prep unit. Store cleaned equipment, utensils, linens in a clean, dry location; where they are not exposed to splash, dust, or other contamination; and at least 6 inches above the floor.
Some food bins were cracked and broken. Fryer baskets starting to show loose wires. Need to be replaced to prevent contamination to food and remain easily cleanable.
Trash dumpster missing. Drains in dumpsters and waste containers shall have drain plugs in place. Trash cans in kitchen need additional cleaning.
Floors need additional cleaning in hard to reach areas (under and around equipment).
Some missing floor tile throughout facility. Keep floors and good repair and smooth and easily cleanable. Mops, brooms and dust pans stored up against prep sink. These items shall be stored away from food and mops shall be stored for air drying after use.
Burger King

Observations:
Slicer for tomatoes on shelving with other clean utensils is soiled. Food preparation sink is soiled with black crud from rubber foot covers on onion slicer. Black pans for hot holding have much build-up on bottom and along sides.
Spray bottle of degreaser hanging on splashguard of food preparation sink with spray nozzle over drainboard of sink.
Few nonfood contact surfaces such as tops of equipment, shelving, etc. have greasy build-up, are soiled, are dusty, etc.
Leaks in pipes underneath 3-compartment sink and underneath food preparation sink.
Floor is lacking grout in few areas - near fryer, near 3-compartment sink. Floors shall be smooth and easily cleanable. Wall tiles missing from area above 3-compartment sink. Replace so that wall is smooth and easily cleanable. Small area of water standing in walk-in.
McDonald's

Observations:
Some of the trays for hot holding had slick to the touch backs. One vessel for filtering did not appear to be washed. Change dishwater often to prevent greasy buildup. these were all taken back to be rewashed.
Staff was observed with long painted fingernails, one with a watch, better hair restraint methods shall be employed. Do not wear jewelry except for plain band rings, no long nails and fingernail polish, and hair shall be contained.
Several of the utensils on the clean utensil rack were still wet. Invert them and allow to air dry.
One of the burrito pans in the freezer had cracked/broken corner. Maintain all utensils and equipment in good repair.
Store mops for air drying after use. The floor at the ware-washing station is slick/some grease. Be sure to change mop water often to not recontaminate the floor. Hang mop heads hanging down to facilitate air drying.
