Last Wednesday, we heard from Gov. Josh Stein, who delivered his first "State of the State" address to the General Assembly and other statewide elected officials.

The General Assembly has also given its final approval of House Bill 47, the fourth round of Hurricane Helene Relief. The final bill includes: over $300M for agricultural loss across the state, $120M for home rebuilding and repair, $100M for repair of prioritized private roads and bridges, $55M for small business infrastructure grants, $20M for debris removal, $10M to support volunteer organizations helping with active rebuilding, $4M for targeted marketing for tourism, and more. The bill also extends regulatory relief for those in the recovery process.

The bill will now go to Governor Stein’s desk, where he is expected to sign the bill to send this relief to North Carolians.

Here I am with Sen. Berger and Sen. Burgin learning about the Carolina Charter of 1663 which the North Carolina State Archives kindly put on display between the chambers!

Opportunity Scholarship Program

In 2013 the North Carolina General Assembly created the NC Opportunity Scholarship program. It recognized a simple yet important principle - choice. Every child has unique educational needs. North Carolina recognizes that uniqueness and offers support for the academic programs that best meet the needs of that child - be they traditional public schools, charter schools, home schools or private schools.

Last year the North Carolina General Assembly expanded the NC Opportunity Scholarship program for families choosing a private school option. You can find details on the program and how to apply here.

"Scholarships are awarded based on a family’s household income and can be used to pay the required tuition and fees to attend an eligible private school.
Who Can Apply?

Parents of any North Carolina student entering kindergarten through 12th grade.

What are the eligibility requirements?
Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the Opportunity Scholarship:
  • At least 5 years old by August 31 or at least 4 years old by April 16 and approved for Kindergarten according to state guidelines.
  • Lives in North Carolina
  • Has not graduated from high school
  • Has not enrolled in a post-secondary institution full-time

Note: Scholarship amount is determined by household income

How much is the Scholarship?
Scholarships range from approximately $3,000 to $7,000 and are based on a family’s household income. Scholarships can be used to pay the required tuition and fees to attend an eligible private school."

Mark Your Calendar for Ag Awareness Week

Ag-Awareness-Week2-copy image

Agriculture is the backbone of daily life, providing the food we eat, the clothes we wear and even the coffee that fuels our mornings. It’s easy to lose that connection when modern grocery stores and retail shopping seem worlds apart from the farms where our goods start out.

As one of North Carolina’s top industries, agriculture and agribusiness employ more than 750,000 people and generate an economic impact of more than $100 billion annually in the state. And March 17-20, agriculture will take center stage at NC State University when agricultural honors fraternity Alpha Zeta hosts its annual Ag Awareness Week to highlight the industry’s importance across the state and beyond. Daily activities will take place on Wolf Plaza and Stafford Commons from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
