Kinston reports wastewater spill due to power outage on Forrest Street
Notification of Discharge of Untreated Wastewater
General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection system or treatment works issue a press release when there is a discharge of more than 1,000 gallons of untreated wastewater or any volume of untreated wastewater discharge reaches surface waters.
The City of Kinston has experienced an untreated wastewater discharge related to a power outage along Forrest Street on February 16,2025. Please find below information on the discharge:
The City of Kinston had a discharge of untreated wastewater on Sunday February 16,2025 due to loss of power at Forrest Street lift station. Damaging winds from storms passing through the area on February 16,2025 caused multiple tree limbs to fall on power lines resulting in a power outage for the lift station. Forrest Street lift station is equipped with an alternate power generator for reliability; however, the PLC failed and the onsite generator did not recognize primary power was lost.
This resulted in the lift stations pumps and controls to become inoperable. City staff was able to control the flow coming to the station by using onsite bypass pump equipment until primary power was restored. The discharge started at 3:31 pm and ended at 4:24 pm on February 16,2025. The estimated volume of the spill is 13,250 gallons and approximately 5,000 gallons was discharged into the Adkin Branch floodway. City staff will be working with contractors to get the generator’s PLC repaired and will be conducting spill recovery efforts along with applying lime in areas that are applicable.
The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on February 17,2025 and is reviewing the matter. For more information contact Steve Miller, Public Services Director with the City of Kinston at 252-939-3282 or the City of Kinston Public Information Officer Sharon Mervin at 252- 939-3270.
