City of Kinston requests pedestrian plan feedback in survey, community workshop

Residents, employees and visitors of Kinston are invited to share their experiences and preferences for walking in the city through an online survey and a community workshop to be held Feb. 4. Both the survey and workshop include questions on walking behavior and barriers that discourage more walking and are part of the city’s new pedestrian plan.

The survey is available online in both English and Spanish at https://kinstonwalks.metroquest.com/. The survey is open until Feb. 29, 2020, and participants who complete the survey will be entered into a $50 raffle. Survey responses will guide the planning process to draft the city’s new Pedestrian Plan in coordination with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and local stakeholders.

The City will also host a drop-in community workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 4 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Neuse Regional Library at 510 N Queen St. The public may join the workshop in the lobby anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. Attendees will be asked to share first-person experiences of walking in Kinston and identify safety issues, problem intersections, barriers and desired connections like new sidewalks and greenways. Staff from the city, NCDOT, and VHB will be available to describe the Pedestrian Plan process.

The city’s last Pedestrian Plan was completed in 2008 and later updated in 2012. The new Pedestrian Plan is supported in part by NCDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative.
