My name is Norma Miller, but many people call me Norma-Jean. I am a rising senior at N.C. State University, so, Go Pack! I am majoring in communication with a media concentration. I am also double-minoring in dance and agribusiness management.

How did I end up at Neuse News? Being a rising senior, it was time to get my act together and find some type of news-related internship to put on my resume.

I immediately thought about B.J. Murphy because I had already seen the impact Neuse News was bringing to the Kinston area — and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

My experience so far has been a whirlwind — every day is something different. I walk in the office and immediately, I am given a task. B.J. has a plan for Neuse News, and he will not stop until he gets it done.

However, there are no complaints here; I specifically told B.J. in my interview I did not want to be bored and he has not let me down yet.

I brag on Neuse News and what we are accomplishing to everyone in my hometown of Beulaville. Everyone’s response is, “So, I will see you on TV someday right?”

I smile, and respond, “I sure hope so.”

This summer internship is really preparing me for my future career as a news anchor. Another intern, Ali, and I have our own show, “In Case You Missed It,” which puts me in front of the camera, as well as behind it.

People ask me why I want to pursue this profession — it’s because I have been in front of people my whole life. I was a competitive dancer and I competed in pageants.

It is safe to say I love being in the spotlight.

I knew I would never take my dance career into the professional sense, so the closest thing I could think of that still let me be in the spotlight was the media field.

I am glad I chose media because it is ever-changing and constantly upgrading to keep up with the next generation. I know I will constantly be learning something new and how cool is that?

I know I have already learned so much from this internship and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the summer holds.
