At approximately 3:00 AM on January 22, 2025, Kinston Police Department (KPD) D Squad responded to the area of Mitchell Wooten in reference to a shots fired call. Dispatchers reported hearing gunshots while the call was being made, prompting a swift response from multiple officers.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers made contact with a 16-year-old juvenile male and 18-year-old Joshua Lloyd of Kinston. During a safety frisk of Lloyd, officers discovered a handgun magazine in his pocket. A search of the immediate area led to the recovery of a firearm.

The juvenile male, who had an unrelated secure custody order, was taken into custody and transported to a juvenile detention center. Lloyd was arrested and charged with trespassing and discharging a firearm within city limits.

KPD will be seeking additional juvenile petitions for the 16-year-old male, which include charges for discharging a firearm within city limits, possession of a firearm by a minor, damage to city property, trespassing, and resisting a public officer.
