Obituary: Frazier Hughes Bruton

Frazier Hughes Bruton, 92, of Kinston passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Spring Arbor of Kinston.

Services will be held on Tuesday January 14, 2025, at Faith Fellowship Church, 2278 Pauls Path Road, Kinston, NC at 11:00 am. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Frazier was born on October 6, 1932, to Oren A. Bruton and Flora Ervin Bruton in Kinston and remained a life-long Kinstonian. He loved Kinston and immersed himself in his hometown community throughout his life.

Upon his graduation from Grainger High School in 1951, he went on to earn his degree from East Carolina Teacher’s College (now ECU) in 1955, playing on the tennis team. Frazier was a postman for 37 years and made many friends on the job and on his routes.

In 1956 Frazier married the love of his life, Alice Fay Spell. They shared each other’s lives until 2016 when Alice passed away. In later years, he developed a deep and special relationship with Betty Croom Jones until her passing in 2022.

What a life Frazier lived! Whether it was being a scoutmaster, football/baseball coach, church men’s fellowship, cast member in a play, being a volunteer for community events or many other activities, Frazier embraced life with vigor. He enjoyed helping others and did so quietly, without fanfare. He also enjoyed sports, woodworking, and in his retirement, painting. He loved Jesus and the Church, and he and Alice were long-time members of both Gordon Street Christian Church and later, Faith Fellowship Church.

“Frapper” (as he was called by some) wore his emotions on the outside, but you always knew where he stood, and what he stood for. He had a zest for life, a way with colloquialisms, and if you met him, you would remember him.

Besides his parents, Frazier was predeceased by brothers, Henry Bruton and Douglas Bruton. He is survived by two sons, Brett Bruton (Teresa) of Archers Lodge, NC, and Lance Bruton (Kim) of Wilmington, NC.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of Spring Arbor of Kinston who took care of him this last year. Also, thanks and love go out to Hattie Hall, Frazier and Alice’s caretaker, and life friend.
