Obituary: Viola Earldean "Dean" Price Carraway

Viola Earldean "Dean" Price Carraway, known to family and friends as Dean, passed away peacefully, Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

A graveside service will be conducted Friday, November 8, 2024, at 11am at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Dean was from Halifax County and grew up in the Roanoke Rapids and Scotland Neck communities. She moved to Kinston at the behest of David and Vera Adkins who told her about the exciting possibilities of employment with the recently opened DuPont Plant. She was very fond of telling the story that upon being presented for an employment exam she was told she was perfect for the job of laboratory technician but there was one problem. She graduated from high school at the age of 17 and at that time they would not employ anyone below the age of 18. She waited until her 18th birthday and was quickly hired.

Dean made many friends in the Kinston area through her connections with DuPont. Additionally, she fostered many friendships in Grifton when she married her much beloved husband, Glenn. She took on all the responsibilities of a whole new family, including a teenage stepdaughter, a teenage stepson, and an infant stepson. She always viewed being able to raise Steven from infancy into adulthood one of her greatest privileges.

One other great love of her life was being involved with Kinston First Pentecostal Holiness Church for more than 60 years. She rarely missed a service until the final years of her life when health issues prevented her from attending. She participated in the adult choir and her Women’s Ministry Group. She also took care of the infants and children in the church nursery. Dean, along with her husband, participated in the Golden Lights senior group activities.

Her family is comforted in knowing that she has finally met her mother who died during childbirth. They rejoice in knowing she is in Heaven with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her stepsons, Anthony Glenn Carraway, M.D., Steven Cooper Carraway (Gail); grandchildren, Steven Cameron Carraway, Lynn Sierra Anne Carraway; her half siblings, Bobby Price, Danford Price, Molly Price Bess; step-grandchildren, Brandie Thompson (Sherman), Jonathan Turner (Chrystal), Christopher Turner (Stephanie); step-great-grandchildren, Austin and Levi Thompson, Jayden, Jarrett, and Hampton Turner.

Dean was preceded in death by her much beloved husband, Glenn Murphy Carraway; stepdaughter, Lynn Darlene Carraway; her parents, William Earl Price, Sr. and Viola Jones Price; her wise and kind stepmother, Aleeze Keech Price; her half-brother, William Price.
