Chad Jackson Named New Fire Chief of Kinston
Chad Jackson, a long-serving member of the Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue, has been named the new Fire Chief for the City of Kinston. Jackson, who began his career with the department in 2003, brings over two decades of experience to his new role.
"Kinston is my home and I take pride in honoring it as the new Fire Chief," said Jackson. "As Fire Chief, just know that I understand the needs and concerns of the community and will strive to lead a department that can respond to all of those."
Jackson's career with the department has been marked by a steady rise through the ranks. After becoming an Operations Captain on A Shift in 2014, he held several leadership positions before being promoted to Deputy Fire Chief in 2022. In his previous roles, Jackson specialized in areas such as technical rescue, confined space rescue, paramedic services, and fire investigations. He also completed the Executive Fire Officer Leadership Program at Wilson Community College.

In his new capacity, Jackson is focused on addressing the department’s equipment and training needs. "Over the next 30 days, I will work with our team to prepare a long-term plan to address equipment and fleet needs," he said. "I will also focus on specialized training, which will assist the department in providing a higher level of service to the industries in the City of Kinston."
The City of Kinston received 29 applications for the Fire Chief position, according to City Manager Rhonda Barwick, who oversaw the selection process. Barwick explained that the process included an assessment center, a formal interview, a management exercise, and a mock presentation to the City Council. While all city job candidates participate in interviews, the additional steps are not always required.
"Although I had several good candidates from which to choose, Chief Jackson's years of experience, knowledge of our operations, and reputation as an effective leader set him apart," Barwick said.
Jackson expressed confidence in his ability to lead the department, highlighting the dedication of the department's personnel. "The Kinston Department of Fire & Rescue employees are dedicated to the City of Kinston," he said. "We always give 110% toward the oath they took to serve the City of Kinston citizens, no matter the situation."
Looking back on his recent experiences as Deputy Fire Chief and Training Captain, Jackson said he feels prepared for the transition. "These past months have prepared and educated me, which I feel will allow for a very seamless transition."
Jackson concluded by emphasizing his commitment to the community and the fire department’s mission. "Kinston is where I grew up and where I serve, and I am proud to lead a department that shares my dedication to this city."
