Continuity in creativity as new owner leads The Right Angle
Asher Willis has officially become the full owner of The Right Angle located at 210 N Herritage St. The transition of ownership was led by a determination to keep the framing shop alive by both Willis and his predecessor, Jess Edwards, who had purchased the building in 2017 and kept the frame shop thriving.
Willis shared his journey, stating, "I used to work for the old shop owner before Jess and his team. I started walking in the door as a part-time job and ended up becoming the assistant manager and then later the manager."
Edwards also recalled how he came to acquire the building and keep the frame shop open. "The previous owner came to me about purchasing the building. She was ready to retire and was going to, kind of, close down the shop. And I met Asher and asked him if he could run the frame shop. He said, 'Yeah, I can do it.' I believe in you, I said, and we're going to keep the frame shop open."
The Right Angle has been an integral part of the local arts community, serving artists and people seeking customized framing for various items, from diplomas to jerseys. Willis expressed pride in the unique and interesting projects they have taken on over the years, such as shadow boxes containing items like knapsacks from Vietnam and vintage tattoo artist tools.
"We have really designed some interesting things - one-of-a-kind type pieces," said Willis.
The community has shown immense support for the store throughout its existence, with numerous customers displaying their gratitude for the high-quality craftsmanship and personal touch. Willis emphasized that the goal is to keep customers happy and satisfied, encouraging them to spread the word about their positive experiences.
"We just want our customers to be pleased to the point where they are losing their minds about how much they love their frame," Willis added.
Jess Edwards noted that the existence of a custom frame shop is crucial for the thriving arts community in Kinston. "There are very few houses around Kinston that you can't go and flip a picture around and not see that Right Angle sticker on the back."
Both Willis and Edwards are excited about the future and are dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Right Angle in the community.
"We want the next generation to know that there are these outlets to go, and you don’t have to go to a franchise. You don't have to go to Hobby Lobby or Michaels. You know you can get your work done right here in town. It's being worked on by somebody that's passionate about their job and will do a good job on it," Willis said.
The Right Angle will continue to serve the art community and the people of Kinston with the same passion and dedication that has kept it thriving for over three decades.
