Rep. Chris Humphrey: The HWY 70 Connector Newsletter
Dear Neighbor,
I trust that you're doing well. This summer, Eastern North Carolina has been bustling with visitors from across the state and across the nation — coming to experience our wonderful way of life. As we draw closer to the end of summer and students are heading back to school, I'm reminded of how grateful I am to live here throughout the year.
We've enjoyed spending the last several weeks in the district as we continue to have phone calls and virtual meetings to move the ball forward on the State Budget (more information included below).
Take a look through our latest newsletter for updates on the budget & more. And as always, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office should you need any assistance. Thank you for your continued support and prayers.
At your service,
Chris Humphrey
State Representative
Hosting Constituents from Jones County
It was a joy hosting Claire Scott and her family, who traveled all the way from Jones County to visit the Legislative Building in Raleigh. Claire is very active in Scouts and is working towards Second Class — demonstrating her passion for community leadership and service to others. We enjoyed spending time with Claire and her family this week.
My Two Favorite "New" Republicans
In July, I got to spend time with my two favorite ‘new’ Republicans, North Carolina Rep. Tricia Cotham & Georgia Rep. Mesha Mainor.
These two legislators lead by example, always putting kids first in their advocacy for opportunity in education. I'm proud to work with them to create a better education system for all.
NC House Fights to End Human Trafficking
Since 2013, the NC House has prioritized combating human trafficking, supporting survivors, and strengthening anti-trafficking laws.
Our legislative efforts include expanding victim resources, imposing harsher penalties on traffickers, raising awareness, and establishing a commission dedicated to ending these heinous crimes.
Our commitment to protect victims and eradicate human trafficking remains resolute, with a focus on exploring new approaches to end this despicable practice and restore the lives of those who have been harmed.

Their achievements are a testament to their passion and commitment to agriculture and FFA. Together, they continue to make Eastern North Carolina proud with their professionalism, leadership, and service to others!

NC Wins #1 Best State for Business (Again!)

We Must Protect Women's Sports...
In July, Governor Cooper vetoed HB 574, endorsing biological men competing in women’s sports.
I co-sponsored the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act to protect female athletes from the dangerous conditions and unfair practices enabled by the Left’s biology-denying policy. I will continue to stand up for women and vote to override the Governor’s veto when we return to session in Raleigh.
ENC's Family Accountability & Recovery Court Receives National Recognition
We are very proud to have the 8th Judicial District's Family Accountability and Recovery Court (covering Wayne, Greene, & Lenoir Counties) receive national recognition for their exceptional work in helping parents struggling with addiction.
Judge Beth Heath and her team were granted this award by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals at their annual conference in Houston. This specialized court is one of the few in the state that offers treatment and support to parents at risk of losing their children due to addiction. By connecting them to addiction treatment centers, building vocational skills, and improving parenting abilities, the court aims to bring about holistic transformation in the lives of these families.
Congratulations to all of the public servants who have worked tirelessly to earn this achievement. We will continue to support their efforts, making a positive impact on the lives of Eastern NC families.

Legislative Update
This summer, much of our legislative work has been happening behind-the-scenes as we put the finishing touches on our fiscally conservative State Budget — negotiating details on key provisions with our friends in the Senate.
We all want to retain our status as the best place to live, work, and raise a family. Sometimes, we have different approaches on how to achieve that.
Recently, House Speaker Tim Moore announced that we have reached an agreement with Senate Leader Phil Berger on the big-picture items. At this point, it’s looking like we’ll have a ratified State Budget by mid-September. More information on that will follow.

In the meantime, we will continue working on behalf of our constituents to address their concerns and take some critical votes to override Governor Cooper’s vetoes. Stay tuned for more.
