Location: Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library, 510 N. Queen St., Kinston, NC 28501

Job Class: Part-Time (29 hours per week)

Salary Range depending on qualifications: Starting $16.50 per hour

Benefits: Paid vacation and sick leave after introductory period, and membership in NC Retirement System

Direct Supervisor: Information Services Department Head

Job Purpose:

The Engagement Librarian I will be responsible for providing library services and programming for adult community members, inside and outside of the library as well as virtually. This position works to meet the programming needs of adults in our community, and will work as a liaison between the library and local businesses, service organizations, and residents. The successful candidate will be a community-oriented professional who is enthusiastic about promoting the library to a broader audience; is actively engaged with new technologies; possesses an aptitude to skillfully manage projects; enjoys direct public service to adults of all ages; and has a firm grasp of current and emerging library trends. The successful candidate will also be experienced and enthusiastic about event planning, marketing and publicity, and social media, particularly in a public library.

Examples of Work:

-Plans and implements programming and outreach services for adults in accordance with the Neuse Regional Libraries’ Strategic Plan.

-Provides friendly and helpful library services to patrons while working the public desk, including information services, reader’s advisory, technology assistance, circulation of materials, and more.

-Presents programs, introduces library services, and provides public presentations to reinforce the value of the Library in the community.

-Designs and prepares marketing materials for programming and outreach events.

-Manages programming budget.

-Identifies opportunities for community engagement.

-Performs special projects as assigned by supervisor and related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

-Ability to develop knowledge of library techniques, technologies, and systems, as well as emerging digital formats and trends

-Detail-oriented with a demonstrated organizational ability, including the capacity to successfully manage multiple projects with timelines, schedules, and deadlines with little supervision

-Ability to set priorities and manage work independently

-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with library personnel and patrons

-Effective communication by phone, e-mail, or in person in both one-on-one and group settings

-Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment

REQUIREMENTS

A four (4) year degree or an equivalent combination of experience and training

North Carolina driver’s license acquired within 30 days of employment

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands: Job involves a considerable amount of movement and activity. Work routinely involves lifting or handling material weighing up to 30 lbs., using a computer, traveling to other work locations, and transporting materials and equipment related to programming and outreach services.

Mental Demands: This is high-level professional and technical work requiring sophisticated reasoning and independent judgment. Work is performed with minimal supervision and allows for significant discretion and variance in work routine.
