Greene County Schools names Teacher Assistant of the Year
Snow HIll - Greene County Schools announced on Wednesday, May 3 that Mrs. Leslie Perkins at Greene County Intermediate School was this year's Teacher Assistant of the Year.
Mrs. Perkins serves as GCIS’s Refocus Teacher. As Mrs. Kelly Garcia, Assistant Principal at GCIS described Perkins’ role as “our resident miracle worker for students and party planner for our staff. I guess her official title is our Refocus teacher. She serves as a calm space where students can go when they need to refocus or when they have not made great choices and need some time to reflect. However, when students are with Mrs. Perkins they soon discover that she is there to truly help them become better people and students. She helps them find solutions and makes sure they are successful in their work. She also works with our families to ensure we are working together to make GCIS a great place for students.
Mrs. Perkins also drives a bus for the school. Garcia said that Perkins sets the tone for the day with the students on her bus, “ The students love being on her route because she has a friendly face for them every day and even brings them treats on special occasions. We love her because she also never turns down driving for our MANY field trips, so our students have experiences outside of GCIS.”
Perkins is an integral part of the GCIS staff. She not only serves as a TA but also as the coordinator for many of the traditional events associated with GCIS. Everything from princess dance, annual coin drive competition, and picnic in the park for the class that raises the most money for the coin drive.
Garcia Shared that “Personally, Mrs. Perkins is someone I go to when I need a calm and respected opinion. She does so much for the GCIS family, and we are truly grateful to have her as part of our team!”
Mrs. Perkins will be recognized by the district at the annual Staff closing meeting in June.
