Help wanted: Lenoir County Department of Social Services - Paralegal I

PARALEGAL I - Salary Range: $36,530 - $55,585.24

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The primary purpose of this position is to provide support for legal services to the Child Support Division and the Family and Children Services Divisions, which includes Child Protective Services, adoptions, foster care and residential services, and Adult Services Unit which includes Adult Protective Services and guardianships.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good working knowledge of case, statutory, and common law. A good working knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and the rules of evidence. The ability to perform legal research in accordance with preliminary instructions as to methods for approach, source material available, and policy and precedent of the office. The ability to summarize facts and evidence, and prepare legal instruments. The ability to communicate clearly and logically in oral and written form. The ability to accurately and efficiently complete assigned work within established time frames. The ability to maintain effective working relations with persons contacted in the course of work. A good working knowledge of the ACTS system for Child Support and the Northwoods system for Adult Services and Child Welfare Services. A good understanding of Child Support regulations, Adult Services laws, and Child Welfare laws.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited school for paralegal training; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in English, Journalism, or a degree directly related to the area assigned; or graduation from high school and four years of paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work. Additional post-paralegal training or specialized experience related to family court, juvenile court, child support court, or guardianship hearings as well as at least two years as a paralegal or legal assistant with juvenile law and court experience would be helpful but not required.
